It’s the most common question we get after “will these fit my rifle”: how many rail covers do I actually need? Buy too few and your hand still finds bare rail. Buy too many and you’ve spent money covering slots your hand never touches. Here’s how to get it right.
Start with your hand, not the rail
Forget covering every slot for a moment. The job of a rail cover is to protect the parts of the handguard your support hand actually touches. For most shooters, that’s one primary grip position — roughly a 4 to 5 inch section of rail.
Put your rifle in a natural shooting grip. Note where your hand sits. That’s your coverage zone. Everything else is optional.
Count your M-LOK slots
M-LOK slots sit on 1.5-inch centers — that’s the standard, regardless of brand. Our panels are 4.7 inches long and cover three slots, which matches a standard adult grip footprint.
The math is simple:
- Count the open slots in your grip zone.
- Divide by three.
- Round up.
Three open slots = one panel. Six slots = two panels. You get the idea.
The three common setups
One panel (most shooters). Mounted at the 6 o’clock or 9 o’clock position where your support hand sits. This is the 80% solution — covers your grip, leaves the rest of the rail open for a light, sling mount, or bipod. Start here if you’re unsure.
Three panels (full wrap). Covers the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock faces for a fully wrapped grip area. Popular with hunters and anyone running the rifle hard in heat — no bare rail anywhere near your hand.
More than three (long handguards). AR-10s and precision builds with 15″+ handguards have room for panels fore and aft of the grip. Count slots, divide by three, order accordingly.
What about the top rail?
Most shooters leave the top rail (12 o’clock) open for optics and iron sights. If you run a long optic setup, a short cover section behind the optic can protect your forehead from a hot rail during prone shooting — ask us how we know.
Don’t forget the other rifles
Here’s the thing about M-LOK: it’s a slot standard, not a platform standard. The same panels fit your AR-15, your AR-10, and any M-LOK-equipped rifle in the safe. Buying a few extra panels isn’t waste — it’s coverage for the whole collection.
Quick reference
- 7″ handguard (pistol/SBR): 1 panel
- 10–13″ handguard (carbine): 1–2 panels
- 15″+ handguard (rifle/precision): 2–3 panels
When in doubt, order one extra. An uncovered slot is annoying; a spare panel in the parts bin is not.
