One of the best things about machined aluminum rail covers: they barely need maintenance. But “barely” isn’t “never.” Carbon builds up, Texas dust gets everywhere, and a two-minute cleaning routine keeps your covers looking and gripping like new for decades. Here’s the routine.
What you’ll need
- A soft cloth or old t-shirt
- A nylon brush (an old toothbrush works)
- Mild solvent or CLP — whatever you already use on the rifle
- That’s it. No special products.
The basic wipe-down (after every range trip)
- Make sure the rifle is clear and cool enough to handle.
- Wipe each cover with a lightly oiled cloth. This takes thirty seconds and prevents 90% of buildup.
- Done. Seriously, that’s the whole routine for normal use.
Deep cleaning (every few months or after heavy use)
Carbon loves to settle into engraving and textured surfaces. For knurled or depth-map textures:
- Apply a little solvent to the nylon brush.
- Work the brush along the texture — with the grooves, not against them.
- Wipe clean with a dry cloth.
- A very light coat of oil on a cloth restores the finish’s depth.
Don’t use steel brushes or abrasive pads on engraved covers. You’ll dull the color fill and scratch the finish. Nylon is plenty aggressive for carbon.
What about Cerakote?
Our Cerakoted covers are even easier — the ceramic coating shrugs off carbon and wipes clean with a dry cloth most of the time. If you shoot suppressed or run high round counts, Cerakote is worth considering for exactly this reason.
What NOT to do
- No harsh chemicals. Brake cleaner and similar solvents can attack color fill and some finishes. Stick to gun-care products.
- No ultrasonic cleaners with engraved covers. The vibration can work color fill loose over time.
- Don’t over-oil. A light film protects; a soaked cover attracts dust and gets slippery. This is Texas — dust is everywhere.
How long do they last?
With this level of care — which is to say, almost none — machined 6061 aluminum covers will outlast every other wear item on your rifle. Barrels wear out. Springs wear out. A quality rail cover just keeps going.
