If you’re shopping for a handguard or rail covers, you’ll run into two mounting standards: M-LOK and KeyMod. They do the same job — attaching accessories directly to the handguard without full-length Picatinny rails — but the industry has made its choice. Here’s the honest breakdown.
What M-LOK is
M-LOK (Modular Lock) was developed by Magpul and released in 2014. Accessories mount with T-nuts that lock into rectangular slots. It’s now a licensed standard — manufacturers (including us) build to the official spec, which means parts from different makers actually fit together.
What KeyMod is
KeyMod came first, built around keyhole-shaped slots. Accessories hook into the round part of the hole and slide forward to lock. It was innovative for its time and still works fine on rifles that have it.
Strength and durability
This is where M-LOK pulled ahead. In testing, M-LOK mounts handle repeated recoil and rough handling better — the T-nut system distributes force more evenly than KeyMod’s hook-and-slide. For hard-use rifles, duty guns, and anything that gets banged around in a truck, M-LOK is the stronger system.
For casual range use, either works. But “either works” isn’t a reason to pick the weaker one.
Accessory support
This one’s not close anymore. Walk through any gun store or scroll any retailer: the overwhelming majority of new handguards, lights, grips, and rail covers are M-LOK. KeyMod accessories still exist, but the catalog shrinks every year while M-LOK’s grows.
Buying into KeyMod today means a smaller selection and higher odds your next accessory won’t come in your mount.
What about Picatinny?
Full-length Picatinny (1913) rails still rule for optics and anything needing maximum lock-up. But a quad rail adds real weight and bulk. Most modern builds run a slim M-LOK handguard with small Picatinny sections only where needed — best of both worlds.
The verdict
Buy M-LOK. It’s stronger, it’s the industry standard, and it’s where all new development happens. KeyMod isn’t junk — if your rifle already has it, quality KeyMod covers still do the job — but nobody building a new rifle in 2026 should choose it.
One caveat: make sure your rail covers match your rail. M-LOK covers don’t fit KeyMod slots and vice versa. Check before you order.
Running M-LOK? Our rail covers are built to the licensed M-LOK spec — machined from 6061 aluminum, made in Texas, and guaranteed to fit.
