Mounting M-LOK rail covers is one of the easiest upgrades you’ll ever do to a rifle. No gunsmith, no special tools — just the Allen wrench that comes in the box and about five minutes. Here’s the full process.
What you’ll need
- Your M-LOK rail covers (with included hardware)
- The Allen wrench from the package (usually 3/32″)
- Your rifle, cleared and safe
That’s it. If your covers didn’t come with hardware, stop — quality covers like ours always include it.
Step 1: Clear the rifle
Triple-check: magazine out, chamber empty, safety on. Do this every single time you work on a firearm. No exceptions.
Step 2: Plan your placement
Decide where your support hand naturally sits on the handguard. Most shooters cover the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions where the hand grips, but at minimum cover your primary grip position.
A good rule: M-LOK slots sit on 1.5″ centers. Count your open slots, and place panels where your hand actually goes — not where they look coolest.
Step 3: Insert the T-nuts
Each cover uses T-nuts that drop into the M-LOK slots. Slide the nut into the slot and rotate it 90 degrees so it catches behind the rail. You’ll feel it seat. The nuts should sit flush and not spin freely.
Step 4: Position the cover and start the screws
Lay the cover over the seated T-nuts and thread the screws in by hand first — just a turn or two. This keeps everything aligned and prevents cross-threading. Never force a screw; if it resists, back it out and realign.
Step 5: Tighten in a star pattern
Snug the screws down gradually, alternating across the panel like lug nuts on a wheel. Then give each a final firm tightening. You’re aiming for solid and rattle-free, not gorilla-tight — over-torquing can deform the T-nut or mar the finish.
Step 6: Check your work
Grab the handguard firmly and try to shift the covers. Zero movement is the goal. Take the rifle to the range and re-check after your first session — heat cycles can settle hardware, and one quick re-snug keeps everything locked for good.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the hand-start. Powering screws in with a driver from the start is how threads get crossed.
- Wrong slot spacing. If the cover doesn’t line up, you’re probably one slot off — recount from a fixed reference point.
- Mixing hardware. M-LOK T-nuts look similar across brands but tolerances differ. Use the hardware that came with your covers.
How long does it take?
Five minutes for your first panel, faster after that. It’s genuinely one of the simplest installs in the AR world.
